The Story So Far...
Long ago, there was nothing. One day, three small lights entered the darkness. Over time, more and more lights joined them until a small civilization was formed. After many eons, these lights gathered to create a world for themselves. This world would be known as Magia.
The world started as a small island, floating in the darkness. From there it expanded outwards, water flowing atop the new crust and new continent emerging from beneath the waves. Pleased with their work, these lights created life in the form of animals and plants. The lives created at that time would come to call these lights their gods and would worship them for many centuries to come, not a one aware that the gods were living among them.
After the world had aged quite a bit, the next generation of gods would be born. The elder gods of creation had all but died out and no longer understood what it meant to care for the people. A few of these knew gods would become known as Yuuki Nyotia the first, Mathin Nyotia the first, and Shouju Tsukiyo-no the first. These new gods lived their lives, spending much of their time trying to fix the mistakes of the old gods. Eventually, however, it was decided that they could do no more.
Rather than continue to try to repair the mistakes of their ancestors, the new gods decided to start fresh. As much as they hated to harm the mortals they lived alongside, it had to be done, and so the great twin continents of Agane and Egana were split apart by earthquakes. This calamity forced longtime enemies to become allies and for a while, there was peace.
After the creation of this calamity, the gods decided their time of intervention should come to an end. Except for a select few who would volunteer, the gods surrendered their powers and their immortality to become mere humans.
Along with them, many of the things that had been normal for the people of Magia vanished. There was no more union spirit to bind soul mates, the godbeasts and godessbeasts became mortal as well and eventually passed on, leaving their Nrrvan children on their own, and the vanishing island of Nigiro would no longer return.
The peace could not last. A deadly plague struct a few short centuries after the earthquakes which broke the land, wiping out much of the magical community. What survivors there were sealed away their magic in tattoos on their body. Because of this, they were for all intents and purposes, human, but they developed rituals to allow them to tap into their power as needed. These people became known as etzli.
For several centuries more, the etzli ruled Magia. Humans began to resent the etzli for making them do the hardest labor and for paying them the lowest wages. Not long after, a second plague hit, wiping out most of the etzli. By the end, there were next to no etzli remaining and humans were suddenly the dominant race.
Using their newfound status, humans rebuilt Magia as they saw fit. Etzli became oppressed as punishment for what they did to the humans, and the prejudice would continue from generation to generation. The old rituals to allow an etzli to tap into their magic had died along with the etzli in the plague and so the tattoos became a source of unhappiness for many people. Those who could not hide their markings were often harmed and called foul names such as "desecrators" or "defilers" as blank skin had become sacred in the eyes of most humans.
Now, in the present, the enslavement of etzli has been legalized and several races thought to be extinct have reemerged.
